Whale Flukes

The annual return of the baleen whales to the Pacific always merits a flutter of interest as they are tracked and counted. These magnificent mammals are endangered by entrapment and vehicle traffic. Noise is a serious issue for Humpbacks who do not travel in a straight line and do not have echolocation abilities.

This installation also includes wall mounted flukes from other Baleen whales who migrate to the Pacific each year- a Minke fluke, and a second Humpback fluke plus a sound track of whale sounds, waves and distant and close boat traffic. Noise pollution, lose of habitat, entanglement, and harassments by well meaning whale watchers are issues to which I want to bring attention.

Humpbacks are recognized by the distinctive markings on their flukes–what should I call mine?
