The Orchid Tree Protest Posters Destruction
As the situation developed in the Fall of 2019 the world watched. Having lived in mainland China and visited Hong Kong I was anxious to see how the protest against the anti extradition law would proceed. It varied from hopeful to desperate and despairing. This triptych was created over the September to February period in reaction to the changes. The first piece was initially called Consider the Orchid Tree , the orchid is the symbol on the flag of Hong Kong. The petals are falling and the sense was that the situation could have gone either way but there was still hope. The bamboo pole and red strings echo traditional scroll paintings. The second piece is covered in protest posters on both sides and shaped as a shield which was used by protesters, and the third piece is the broken and bloody escalation that took place in the streets.
